INDEXABYTE

DATA / LOCAL / CONTROL

Privacy policy

Updated 13 October 2026

Indexabyte is a macOS disk-usage app published by Machine Moving Image Creative Ltd. It works locally and does not send scan data to us.

What the app reads

When you choose a folder or disk, Indexabyte reads file and folder names, full paths and filesystem size metadata. It records scan dates, access failures, excluded mounted volumes and whether a scan was stopped. It does not open the contents of scanned files.

What stays on your Mac

If you save a scan, its complete results and the name you give it are stored in the app's local macOS container. Starred files and folders are stored locally as a Review later shortlist, including recorded paths, sizes and scan dates. The app also stores macOS permission bookmarks to remember locations you chose. Scan bookmarks request read-only access. Opening a saved scan does not require its original disk to be connected.

Exports, backups and sharing

A CSV export contains full file paths, sizes and scan status. A standard PDF summary includes names and locations; enabling Hide names and paths replaces them with generic labels while keeping sizes, counts and scan details. You choose where to save it and whether to share it. If you choose a folder managed by a cloud-storage service, that service may sync the exported file according to your settings. Your own system backups may also include app data. These processes are controlled by you and the relevant services, not by Indexabyte.

No data collection or tracking

Indexabyte has no accounts, advertising, analytics, tracking or third-party SDKs. It does not upload scan data or file contents and does not use data to identify you. Apple may separately process purchase, App Store or operating-system diagnostics information under its own privacy policy and your settings.

Your controls

You choose which locations the app may scan. macOS may continue to protect some files. Full Disk Access is optional and does not replace choosing a folder. You can move a saved scan to the Bin from its menu; this affects the snapshot only and leaves the scanned files untouched. Unstarring an item removes only its Review later entry. You control exported CSV and PDF files and their deletion.

Retention and removing local data

Review stars remain until you unstar them. To remove all stars outside the app, quit it and move only ReviewStars.json from its local Application Support folder to the Bin. Saved scans remain until you move them to the Bin. macOS keeps items in the Bin until you empty it. Folder permission bookmarks remain until you remove them. To remove remembered folder permissions, quit Indexabyte, use Finder > Go > Go to Folder and open ~/Library/Containers/com.wearemachine.indexabyte/Data/Library/Application Support, then move only folder-access.json to the Bin. Removing the app's Scans folder there also removes its saved history. Choose a location again in the app if you want to grant access later. You can manage additional macOS permissions in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

We cannot access or delete the scan data on your Mac. Contact support if you need help removing it. Any exported files, system backups or copies you shared are under your control.
