SUPPORT / MACOS 14+ / LOCAL BY DESIGN
Your disk, decoded.
Find large files and folders, including hidden items. Save a complete snapshot and return to it when you need it.
Indexabyte requires macOS 14 or later and supports Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Start a scan
Choose a folder or disk with CHOOSE, allow access in the system picker, then click START SCAN. The app includes hidden files automatically. Use Files and Folders to explore the largest items, or search by name or path. Folders opens in Largest view; switch to Hierarchy to expand branches and keep parents and children together. Search expands matching branches.
Will I need to choose the drive again?
If macOS cannot save a permission bookmark, the app uses your selection for the current session and shows a small note. Choose that location again after reopening the app. This does not prevent saving or reopening scan snapshots.
Why are some files unreadable?
macOS sandbox rules and privacy protections can limit access. Choose the location again if a permission has expired. See Unreadable for failures. Full Disk Access is optional and cannot replace the folder picker or remove all system restrictions. Select connected disks separately.
What do the two sizes mean?
File Size is the reported length of a file. Allocated is the reported disk space for its blocks. Cloud-only, sparse, compressed and shared files can differ. Folder totals include descendants, so nested totals overlap. Totals are not a promise of how much space deletion would recover.
Save, open and export
SAVE SCAN stores every recorded result, beyond the 2,000 ranked rows displayed. SAVED SCANS lists previous snapshots; open one, rename it, or export it. EXPORT offers a small CSV of the largest 1,000 folders and 1,000 files, a CSV of the displayed rows (including search and folder scope), or a compact one-page PDF overview of the entire scan. Complete scan CSV is optional and can be too large for Excel. A saved scan remains readable without the source disk. Finder reveal uses the current location, which may have moved or been removed. Stopped scans are labelled partial.
Import scans from DiskScope
Choose File > Import saved scans. In the folder picker, press Command-Shift-G and enter ~/Library/Application Support/DiskScope/Scans. Valid scans are copied and duplicate scan identities are skipped. Original archives are preserved.
Does Indexabyte delete files?
No. It helps you inspect storage and reveal items in Finder. Moving a saved scan to the Bin removes the snapshot only.
A little list, for later
Click the small star beside a file or folder to keep its recorded details in REVIEW LATER. The list survives closing the app, even without saving the whole scan. Unstarring removes only that entry; it does not affect the original file.
Find matching filenames
In FILES, click DUPLICATES to open a separate window. It checks every recorded file in the current folder scope for exactly the same filename and extension, including capitalisation. Expand a group to compare recorded locations and sizes, star an item or reveal it in Finder. Matching names do not prove matching contents. The app never reads file contents or deletes duplicates.
Share a private PDF
Choose EXPORT > PDF and select Hide names and paths in the save panel. The one-page summary uses generic file and folder labels instead of your names and locations. Sizes, counts, scan date and coverage remain; decide whether those details are suitable to share. The standard PDF includes names and paths.

If you contact support, include your macOS version, the app version and a description of the problem. Remove private paths and names from any screenshots or exports you share.
